THRONGS OF WEBSURFERS FIND “MISSING PAGES”
Stunningly Original Photo-Animated Sci-Fi Thriller Receives Server-Crashing Attention
TOKYO - “Very cool movie made entirely of still photos,” reads the succinct description on a high-profile pop culture website. Within minutes of the link’s posting, Jerome Olivier’s speaking-pictures.com crashed spectacularly, having been inundated by websurfers swarming to see his strikingly innovative short film, the beautiful and haunting sci-fi thriller “Missing Pages (amended version).”
With a new server set up to accommodate the surge of interest, speaking-pictures.com hosts the first seven minutes of “Missing Pages (amended version),” a 24-minute short shot entirely with a digital still camera and manipulated using a method dubbed “fotomation.” Jerome’s technique brings new perspective and depth to the mediums of photography and film, compelling viewers to perceive a narrative in a new way while enthralling with flashes of astonishing three-dimensional visuals, artful camera movement and incredible images. All of this takes the fascinating time-travel thriller at its center to the next level.
The story of Professor Tanokura, who develops a time machine only to find himself hunted by some of the most indelibly terrifying post-apocalyptic henchmen sci-fi has ever seen, captured the attention of fark.com, a popular site that specializes in linking to the World Wide Web’s most interesting offerings. Soon, internet users from around the world got their first glimpse of Jerome Olivier’s work. Combining edgy, adrenaline thrills with poignant drama, intelligent subtlety and the unique vision of a true artist, “Missing Pages” heralds Jerome Olivier a major talent on the rise.
Born in London and raised in Quebec, Jerome graduated university with a BFA in filmmaking and followed that up by traveling around the world, ultimately settling in Tokyo. “Making Japan my home, I realized, gave me the chance to strip away the sense of security generated by familiar surroundings to remove myself from the conventions I’d grown accustomed to,” he reflects. “It was the perfect opportunity to test myself to discover what I was capable of doing without relying on traditional systems.”
During his first five years in the Far East, Jerome like his stylistically groundbreaking compatriots Michel Gondry and Hammer & Tongs worked for production and design companies, a focus that helped him develop the artistic skills needed to start Speaking Pictures. Concurrently, Jerome began creating “Missing Pages,” funded by the J-Pop star Chage of Chage & Aska fame. He is currently developing new projects and is sure to be a filmmaker you’ll be hearing more about in the near future.
